The American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) classifies portland cement into 5 major categories called "Types". A portland cement's Type indicates the properties and performance standards it delivers to its application in the final concrete product. Each Type is designated by a Roman numeral which is sometimes accompanied by a letter designating a subtype. 92% of the portland cement produced in North America is Type I, II or I/II.
