Mineral admixtures or Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) are byproducts of manufacturing processes. These materials may be added to concrete to:
- Increase strength
- Reduce permeability
- Provide greater economy
- Influence other concrete properties
Slag cement and fly ash are the two most common SCMs. Slag cement is a co-product of iron production. The ASTM specification for slag cement is ASTM C 989.
Fly ash is a byproduct of electric power generation and can vary widely depending on source. The applicable ASTM specification for fly ash is ASTM C 618.
